Taste Buddies, we tried out Pizza Hut’s new “Beyond Italian Sausage Pizza” this past weekend.
Pizza Hut, in partnership with Beyond Meat, has created a new pizza that features a plant-based sausage that they claim has the same taste and flavor as the real meat on a sausage pizza.
Just to be clear, this pizza is not for our vegan Taste Buddies. The pizza has cheese (unless you request a pizza with no cheese), so it contains animal byproducts. However, if you are vegetarian or interested in a plant-based pizza option, then Pizza Hut’s Beyond Italian Sausage Pizza might work well for you.
Toni J ordered a pizza with marinara sauce; while Toni N ordered a white sauce version of the Beyond Italian Sausage Pizza (creamy garlic sauce).
Our Honest Reactions to Pizza Hut’s Plant-Based Pizza
To be honest, we were a little underwhelmed by the plant-based pizza as you can see in our Facebook Live video taste test. We fully expected the pizza to blow us away like the regular Italian sausage pizza from Pizza Hut always does.
The sausage was stuffed full of oregano and herbs. It wasn’t disgusting, but it lacked the meaty taste of an Italian sausage.
Toni J rated the pizza an 8 out of 10. She actually said that she could not tell a difference between the sausage on the Beyond Italian Sausage Pizza and the regular sausage pizza. But she felt like the pizza was missing something (probably meat!).
Toni N, the tougher critic and Italian sausage connoisseur, gave the plant-based pizza a 6 out of 10. She could definitely taste the difference between the Beyond Meat sausage and the normal sausage on a Pizza Hut pizza.
Neither Toni would order this pizza again. However, the pizza wasn’t horrible. We didn’t hate the pizza, but we also didn’t love it. We think that folks who enjoy plant-based, meat substitutes might enjoy this plant-based pizza.
We applaud Pizza Hut for its innovation and for a valiant attempt to provide plant-based pizza options so that vegetarians aren’t forced to eat a plain cheese or veggie pizza from Pizza Hut.
