Toni Taste Buds
Our latest at-home culinary adventure was quick and high-calorie: fried biscuits and fried donuts!
With restaurants closed due to COVID and safety concerns surrounding dining out, restaurant junkies must resort to experimenting at home. Although the Toni Girls would much rather be out doing restaurant reviews than cooking, desperate times have forced us to resort to experimenting at home. (Check out our chocolate churro empanada and our sour cream pound cake recipes for some more fun desserts.)
Fry up the Biscuits
Fried biscuits hold a special place in Toni J’s heart. Fried biscuits are a family tradition that Toni J’s father passed down to her. They bonded over the biscuits. Sweet story, right?
Well, the sweetest thing about fried biscuits is actually that the recipe is super simple and takes less than 15 minutes to knock out. All you need is a can of biscuits and some grease. This recipe is a real Southern delight.
Start by putting some oil on at medium heat. As you wait for the oil to heat up, take a fork and poke holes in both sides of the biscuits. Poke all over; it’s a nice stress reliever.
Right before the grease starts popping, drop those biscuits. Toni J likes to flip the biscuits to brown them on both sides. Toni N says flip at your own risk.
Once your biscuits are golden brown, pop them out of the grease and place them on a plate lined with paper towel.
Pro tip: For Taste Buddies who want to achieve a shorter frying time, thin out the dough so that it will fry all of the way through in less time.
Personally, the Toni Girls like our fried biscuits to be nice and thick!
Drop the Donuts
The process for making fried donuts is the same as making fried biscuits. The only difference for fried donuts is that before you drop the dough in the grease, take the biscuit and gently pull the dough until you make a hole in the center.
After you get your dough formed into a donut shape, then poke holes in the dough and follow the same steps that we talked about for the fried biscuits.
It’s that easy, Taste Buddies!
Jazz up your treats
Now comes the fun part. You can dress your fried biscuits and fried donuts up in any way that you please. Pick your pleasure.
Get jiggy and drizzle some chocolate over your fried donut. Spruce up your fried biscuit with powdered sugar. Traditionalists like Toni N will enjoy their fried treat with good, old-fashioned syrup. While carefree spirits like Toni J might enjoy a combination of powdered sugar and chocolate.
However you enjoy your fried biscuit or donut, have fun. In these strange and uncertain times, it is important to enjoy simple moments. These fried treats are fun for the kids and family. Warning: fried biscuits and donuts are not diet-friendly.
Toni J put together a quick tutorial to show our Taste Buddies how to fry up and decorate those fried treats. Check out our YouTube channel to see our restaurant reviews and to watch us (attempt to) whip up fun dishes.
So, Taste Buddies, did you fry up those biscuits or drop the donuts? Drop by the comments and let us know how your at-home culinary adventure turned out.
Don’t despair if the fried biscuits and fried donuts weren’t everything that you wanted. You can always leave it to the experts and check out one of our favorite Palm Beach dessert spots.
Happy frying, Taste Buddies!
