By Toni Taste Buds
Taste Buddies, with this quarantine, we must find ways to keep a positive attitude. Although the Toni Girls prefer to be out doing restaurant reviews, the pandemic has forced us into the kitchen a whole lot more. Music and dance can give you the boost that you need while you’re cooking–even if you dislike cooking as much as we do!
The Toni Girls are true ’90s babies so we took this opportunity to hit you with some classic R&B music to get you rocking in the kitchen.
Here are the top 10 songs on our 90’s R&B cooking playlist.
We have a full length ’90s playlist at the end of this post.
Check it out!
#1 “Baby” by Brandy (1994)
Whether you’re #TeamBrandy or #TeamMonica, you can’t deny that Brandy Norwood is the ’90s. Brandy’s music was the soundtrack to the Toni Girls’ childhood. We remember riding around Palm Beach in Mama Toni’s hoopty, dancing to Brandy’s iconic music. “Baby” is just one of our favorites. This hit, from Brandy’s debut album, belongs on every ’90s playlist. This song will keep you jamming in the kitchen.
#2 “Ex-Factor” by Lauryn Hill (1998)
Of course, Queen Lauryn is on our cooking playlist. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is one of those no-skip albums that never gets old. Lauryn’s timeless music is the perfect vibe for making magic in the kitchen. There is a reason that this song was sampled by Cardi B, Drake, and so many more!
#3 “Poison” by BBD (1990)
Get the party started with this certified bop. Make sure you don’t drop the food or have a spill like Toni N did while making her air fryer cake. (Check out the hilarious blooper reel!)
#4 “Weak” by SWV
This is the song that every real R&B lover can sing word-for-word. We love this R&B hit. Belt this one out as you are making your favorite dish with your favorite folks.
#5 “Fantasy” by Mariah Carey (1995)
“Fantasy” is another one of those songs that brings back our happy childhood memories. We’re instantly reminded of a scene in one of our all-time favorite movies when we hear this song–Rush Hour! (Remember when Soo Yung was singing her heart out in the car before she was snatched up?) No ’90s cooking playlist would be complete without a track or two from the Queen of Christmas, Ms. Mariah Carey!
#6 “Real Love” by Mary J. Blige (1992)
Speaking of queens, Mary J. Blige’s first studio album catapulted her into queen status. We love this tune from Mary. We all need real love. One way to find love is in the kitchen, so be sure to add this jam to your cooking playlist.
#7 “On & On” by Erykah Badu (1997)
Get all the good vibes going in your kitchen with a selection from Ms. Badu. This classic track is a gem from one of the greatest decades in modern music. Erykah Badu’s Grammy award-winning debut single definitely belongs on your ’90s cooking playlist.
#8 “What About Your Friends” by TLC (1992)
Cooking is better with friends. Our ’90s cooking playlist is full of upbeat jams that will keep your crew bopping in the kitchen. You can’t go wrong with a TLC song. We added this song to our playlist so that you can hit all of the old school dance moves while you cook!
#9 “Candy Rain” by Soul For Real (1994)
Are you jamming yet? So are we! This song reminds us of late night car rides, jamming out with our cousins. If you’re not familiar with Soul For Real, allow the Toni Girls to introduce you to the group that gave the world one of the best bops of the ’90s. You need this one on your cooking playlist for sure.
#10 “Just Kickin’ It” by Xscape (1993)
Party on down to the Toni Taste Buds beat. Just kick it…in your kitchen. Xscape is one of the baddest girl groups to ever do it. Their songs are so relatable, and their lyrics cut through to your soul. It’s no wonder that their members have written some amazing hits for other artists. Do yourself a favor and add as many Xscape songs as you can to your cooking playlist. Thank us later, Taste Buddy.
